WhyWordPress

Now that you know what WordPress is, why does AKOR Services use it as the main platform to develop with and why is it right for you and/or your business.

I should start by putting my cards on the table.  I began developing web sites in the early days before any of these CMS systems existed.  (I am telling my age).  (This is a greatly-condensed history lesson).  I began “coding” websites literally by hand in the early days using nothing but HTML (Hypertext Markup Language).  It was a slow, tedious and arduous process, but I learned early-on what made a website tick.  (and I have no desire to go back to those days).  Next came along WYSIWYG (what-you-see-is-what-you-get….well kind of) interfaces that made the process easier, but it was not very accurate, and they all had lots of problems.  Then came Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) which is still in use today.  It made great strides in standardizing web page development.  Then there were programs such as Adobe Dreamweaver, which utilized CSS, and handled many of the mundane tasks of website management.  But content and pages were still generated “offline”, on a single computer, and then uploaded to the website.  Which brings us to today.

The CMS of today typically have a core “program” which resides online, on your website.  It maintains some type of database of all your content that you have created.  It then, when requested by a browser somewhere, uses its’ core program to take the content from a database, and then DYNAMICALLY generate the code, which is in turn sent out to the requesting browser, which it displays to the end user in the form of a pretty page.  But enough tech-talk.  All you really need to know is that the dynamic nature of a CMS is actually what lends itself well to all the features that I am about to tell you.

One more thing.  There are many CMS out there.  WordPress is NOT the only one available.  But in my mind, it is the best one.  Here is why:

  • Open-source code.
  • Low cost of ownership for a new website.
  • The largest user base by a large margin.
  • This user base means there is a lot of support for not only WordPress, but also for the modules called Plugins.
  • Good Search Engine Optimization (SEO) practices built-in to the program.
  • Good security (but I will address this more in another post).
  • Easy-to-use interface.
  • Themes (new term) make changing the look of your web site very easy (more on this later).
  • Updatability is generally quite easy and reliable.
  • Can be easily taught to someone that will be a content creator, without fear of damaging the website.
  • Scalable and highly customizable.
  • Internet-based, so it can be updated from anywhere with an internet connection.
  • Security logins are available for both administration, and even for users (if needed).

Finally, it is the philosophy of AKOR Services that we will never hold our clients “hostage”.  We will always make sure that after we develop a website for our clients, they will always have access to their domain names, their web site, and their content.  You retain ownership and control!  We can teach you to update your websites yourself.  Most still choose to have us maintain their websites for them, so they can concentrate on serving their products and services to their customers.
