Lately, the shop has been humming with the sound of our laser cutter, and we’ve been experimenting with some fun designs that really show off what this technology can do.

If you’ve ever wondered how those perfectly smooth, intricate plastic shapes are made, you’re in the right place. Today, we’re diving into the world of acrylic laser cutting: a process that combines high-tech precision with old-school creativity to produce some pretty stunning results.

The Story of the Giant Bunny

We recently decided to run some tests on a new design to see just how much detail we could squeeze out of a sheet of acrylic. The result was our “Easter Bunny,” and he’s been a bit of a conversation starter around here.

At first glance, this little guy looks like he might be a stylish, oversized earring. But looks can be deceiving! This bunny actually stands 8 inches tall. We designed it as a large-scale ornament, perfect for a window display, a festive wall hanging, or even a unique piece of seasonal desk decor.

One of the most interesting parts of the “Maker” process is the testing phase. When we were ready to cut this design, we reached for the material we had immediately on hand: a vibrant, translucent red acrylic. While the red looks sharp and modern, that’s the beauty of custom work: it’s all about the options. We think this design would look absolutely incredible in a soft pastel pink or even a frosted clear finish for that high-end boutique feel.

Testing with “on-hand” materials allows us to check the structural integrity of the design. With an 8-inch piece that features intricate cutouts, we have to make sure the “limbs” of the design aren’t too fragile. This bunny passed with flying colors, proving that you can have both intricate detail and a sturdy final product.

What Exactly is Acrylic Laser Cutting?

Acrylic laser cutting typically uses a high-powered CO2 laser beam. Instead of a traditional saw blade that hacks through material (leaving behind dust and rough edges), the laser works by focusing an intense beam of light onto the material. This beam is so hot and so concentrated that it actually vaporizes the acrylic along the path of the design. CO2 lasers cut all colors of acrylic flawlessly.

Would you be surprised to know that this ornament was actually cut out with a diode laser? Yes, diode lasers can cut acrylic too, however, due to the light spectrum of the diode laser, it cannot cut clear, blue or some pastel colors of materials. Hence, the “testing” so we can determine exactly what colors can be successfully cut with a diode laser.

Because the laser is essentially melting its way through, it leaves behind what we call a “flame-polished” edge. If you look closely at the edges of our Easter Bunny, you’ll notice they are glass-clear and perfectly smooth to the touch. There’s no sanding required, no jagged bits, and no dullness. It’s ready to go the moment it comes off the machine bed.

It is a little less smooth with a diode laser.

This precision is why laser cutting is the go-to choice for promotional products and printing. Whether we are cutting out a logo, a specific shape for a sign, or a custom ornament, the laser follows a digital path with a level of accuracy that human hands just can’t replicate.

Beyond the Cut: Laser Engraving

While the 8-inch bunny is a great example of cutting all the way through the material, our machines are also masters of engraving.

Engraving is essentially “drawing” with the laser. By turning down the power or increasing the speed, the laser just kisses the surface of the material, removing a tiny layer to create a permanent mark. This is how we add logos, serial numbers, or personalized names to items.

Imagine taking that red bunny and engraving a child’s name on the ear, or a company logo on the base. It adds that extra layer of personalization that makes a product truly one-of-a-kind.
